If you wondered what Google meant when they said the Nexus One would be getting “more retail availability”, just take a quick look at the image above. That’s right, it’s an advertisement for a Nexus One sold through a retail channel! Oh my! When did this happen you might ask? Well, it appears wireless retailer and T-Mobile affiliate i Wireless has started offering a number of Android devices in the past few days, including the Nexus One. I Wireless is now selling the phone for $299.95 on contract after rebate — a good bit more than the $179 Google charges, but in return, it looks like you can select just about any plan T-Mobile offers (Google restricts you to the Even More 500 plan to get the subsidy). This is a pretty good deal if you ask me. So, anyone want to head over the i Wireless and pick one up? As an avid user and supporter of Boxee for my HTPC needs, the announcement of Google TV left me wondering how I was going to be able to combine both the best interface for an HTPC hands down with my beloved Android platform. The guys over at Boxee are WAY ahead of me it turns out! A blogger over at the Candler Blog had an email conversation with Andrew Kippen of Boxee, asking him what he thought about the announcement of Google TV, and the implications it might have for Boxee. The following is Andrew’s response taken from said article: We obviously followed the [GoogleTV] announcement and the demo. We think that it would be great to see an open OS such as Android gain market share in the living room. It would enable users to download Boxee on their TV (we will be building an Android-based App) and start using it without the hassle of connecting their computer to the TV. We have somewhat of a different view of browsing the web on TV. While it was a big part of the Google Demo we believe browsing the web as-is makes more sense on laptops and mobile devices (due to their personal nature, the screen size and the input device) than it does on TV. We look forward to playing with the TV and working with them to bringing Boxee to Android devices. You read correctly. if there’s a TV platform running on TVs that can deliver a great Boxee experience then we want to be there. That means we’re looking at developing an Android App version of Boxee for the upcoming Google TV . [emphasis added] I wanted to make sure I read that correctly. I’ve heard they are working on an Android remote app similar to the one they have on the iPhone, but this sounds like something different: You read correctly. if there’s a TV platform running on TVs that can deliver a great Boxee experience then we want to be there. That means we’re looking at developing an Android App version of Boxee for the upcoming Google TV . [emphasis added] It will be interesting to see what this Boxee app is going to look like. It sounds like Boxee is going to leverage the Sony TV’s that are going to have Android built into them so people can run thier Boxee app without any computer necessary. This would be a major step forward for Boxee, and sounds like an incredible idea to capitalize on all the risk that Google is taking with Google TV, at no risk to themselves. I am getting more and more excited about Google TV, especially as I see useful, practical applications being thought about. Stay tuned for more details as they come out. According to Android Central , Froyo actually contains some nifty little improvements to the stock on-screen keyboard. Instead of pressing, or holding down the ?123 button to access the number keys, you can now swipe upwards from the keyboard and bring them up (as seen in the picture above). In addition, if you have multiple keyboard languages installed, you can simply swipe left and right across the space bar to switch between them. While these improvements are nice, they won’t be causing the stock keyboard to win any special awards. As evident from his recent Gizmodo interview , VP of Engineering at Google, Andy Rubin, is already aware of the need for improvement with Android’s on-screen keyboard. It will be interesting to see what changes he has in mind. If I were in charge, which I ‘m clearly not, Google would have already purchased Swype and given the Android platform the keyboard it deserves. My fingers are crossed for Gingerbread with Swype. That would be mad-wicked-cool! Might We Suggest… Motorola Shadow/Droid 2/Whatever Unveiled iPhone Style First Gizmodo acquired an iPhone that was “left” in a bar. First Gizmodo acquired an iPhone that was “left” in a bar. Now, Gizmodo decides to post a picture of the Verizon branded Motorola Shadow, or whatever they’re gonna end up calling it, which was apparently, “left” in a gym. Since when do prototypes get lost and found so frequenty? And more importantly, when did smartphones start going to bars and working out? Maybe these phones are so “super” that they’ve learned to sprout legs and flee their masters. Or, perhaps lost phones are just becoming the new blurry-cam leak. Either way, this phone is a beast. I was surprised that there doesn’t seem to be a hardware keyboard. Motorola really seems to be pushing into HTC territory with this bad boy. Here’s what we’ve now confirmed about it: 4.3″ screen 8MP camera capable of 720p video Probably running Froyo 2.2 at release with new MotoBlur (much sleeker than old UI) 16GB internal storage 1GHz Snapdragon processor HDMI out port I ‘m gonna go out on a limb and assume that the screen will not be of AMOLED origin. The picture seen above makes it seem a bit washed out and back-lit (but this could just be due to the lighting or camera). We’ve also yet to see a 4.3″ AMOLED screen put on a phone, leading me to assume there’s a technical reason behind it that we’re just not aware of. For now, everyone seems to be sticking with LCDs for these super-sized phones (aside from the 4″ Super AMOLED found on the Samsung Galaxy S). However, in this case, I’d love to be wrong. Verizon customers can expect this device to launch around June or July time. Anyone interested? Might We Suggest… Is This the Droid Heir Apparent? Hi there! Earlier today, the big magenta announced that they will finally be expanding their HSPA+ network through the Northeast. Now, all of you lucky T-Mobile customers using 3G Android phones will be able to experience a major boost in speed. We have been checking here in Albany, New York all evening but haven’t seen anything yet, but speeds should increase in the next few days. As someone who watches a lot of streaming media, I can’t wait. For those who don’t know, the HSPA+ wireless standard delivers download speeds up to 21Mbps (although most current phones only support 7.2Mbps). This is quite a bit faster than Sprint’s Wimax network. Another good thing about HSPA+ is that customers can keep their current 3G phone to experience the boost. T-Mobile does not require you to purchase any new phones(unlike some of their competitors). It is also important to mention that T-Mobile doesn’t charge you an extra ten dollars per month to access these HSPA+ speeds like Sprint will be. Are any of you guys experiencing a speed boost in the Northeast? What are your download speeds? If so, let us know!
