Kyocera unveiled their Zio M600 over two months ago at CTIA yet we’re still waiting to hear which carrier will be offering the device. The last time we checked in , it was rumored to be Sprint-bound with a $99 price tag attached to it. A source of ours is telling us tonight that it’s actually headed for Boost Mobile with a possible Best Buy exclusive deal. Close enough, right? The Zio M600 has received somewhat lukewarm reception thus far as it’s on the low end of the Android totem pole. We played with one at CTIA and found it to be rather unremarkable. However, this might be the key to its success. With a rumored $169-$219 unsubsidized cost and a $50 all-you-can-eat calling/data plan, the Zio M600 could do very well. As a quick refresher, the features include: 3.5-inch WVGA (480×800 pixels) touch screen Android 1.6 (Donut) 600MHz processor 512MB internal storage 3.2 megapixel camera Might We Suggest… Battle of the Network Stars When purchasing a new phone many of us are being faced with not only a question of a handset but a prospective betrothed wireless carrier for at least a two year term (this is/was the genius of th…
A few months back a few documents were listed on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group website for a Samsung i897 handset. At the time it was found that the quad-band GSM device featured a 4.0-inch AMOLED screen, the TouchWiz 3.0 interface, and Bluetooth 3.0 support. Sounding very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S that debuted at CTIA in March, many believed it could be a variant destined for AT&T. As we draw closer to the inevitable release we’re starting to learn a few new specs. A tipster of ours informs us that in addition to the previous details, the phone will be running Android 2.1 “Eclair” when it arrives. Other hardware details are said to be a 5-megapixel camera and 2GB internal storage. The touch-only device features a display reported to be 800×480 resolution. If you ask us, all of this still sounds eerily similar to the Galaxy S. The two phones match up in pretty much every area so far. We’re hoping to dig a little deeper and perhaps get our hands on a picture or two. Be sure to check back or subscribe to AndroidGuys if you want to stay in the loop! Might We Suggest… Uh-Oh! After months of waiting, Dell finally officially divulged their plans for the 5-inch Streak tablet today. Starting next month, the “iPad Killer” will become available for customers in the UK through a variety of channels. Dell plans to release the device here in the United States this summer. The Streak features a 5-inch WVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera, and a front-facing camera. Other hardware details include a 1GHz processor, 2GB internal storage, WiFi, and 3G connectivity. In terms of software the tablet phone comes loaded with Google Maps, Android Market, and a variety of other applications. Although it will launch with Android 2.1 installed, Dell plans to upgrade the device to 2.2 (Froyo) later this year. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has given us our first (tiny) glimpse at yet another Motorola smart phone. Known as the XT502, the phone may also go by the codename of ‘Greco’. The picture associated with the product detail carries the name greco1.jpg so we’re assuming that comes from the handset maker. The details are pretty slim but we do know it’s a quad-band ( 850/900/1800/1900 ) GSM device with support for 8021.11 b/g, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, and GPS/AGPS. If the picture is any indication, the phone likely has a stock Android experience although there is plenty of time to tweak things before release. Other details we can somewhat assume are a 3.5mm headphone jack and camera with a flash. The handset i s said to be running Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI. Aside from that, everything else remains a mystery. Not content with their Android 2.1 update from a few weeks ago, Motorola Droid owners are already looking for 2.2 (Froyo) information. Our inbox and twitter feed has been hammered with requests from Droid users begging for the latest Android release. ” How long will we have to wait ?” seems to be the question of the week. The guys over at SlashGear decided to reach out to Motorola to see if the handset maker has an update in store. “We’re excited to see Google’s news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it’s made available to the open source community.” While I can’t comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future. Until someone can get Motorola to pin down an actual time frame, ‘near future’ will have to suffice. Well that didn’t take long. The HTC EVO 4G has been rooted thanks to the developer/hacker community. We can’t say we’re shocked at all by this – Google and Sprint did give put a couple thousand of these right into the hands of the guys who love to tinker with phones most. It just so happens Matt Matracci was one of those guys in attendance. A few buddies and a couple of hours later… presto! Hi there! We noticed you staring at that picture up above. You like? Yeah, that is presumably the follow up to the Motorola Droid from Verizon. It looks great, doesn’t it? Would you like to hear the rumored specs? They’re just about the nicest we’ve seen on an Android phone to date. Okay, here goes… As we looked around a bunch of posts within Howard Forums, the best we can piece together is this: 4.1″ TFT FWVGA screen Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 Processor 2GB -8GB internal memory Android 2.1 (Eclair), possibly 2.2 (Froyo) upon launch MOTOBLUR (BLUR community chat) 8 MP camera with 720p video recording 1080p output via HDMI port Roughly 9mm in thickness We’ve seen July listed a few times as the release time frame so Android 2.2 could make the cut. However, based on Motorola’s history, we’re guessing it’s Android 2.1 at launch. As for the name of this thing, you guess is as good as ours at this point. We’ve heard Droid 2, Droid Xtreme, Shadow, Droid Shadow, and a couple others. Of all the names we’ve seen tossed around, Shadow seems to stick the best. On the other hand, the “Droid” label is clearly marked in the picture. Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out, won’t we? Might We Suggest… Droid Sequel Gets Wi-Fi Certification? There were a handful of phones on display at last week’s Google I/O which have yet to cross our radar. As good of a job as we think we do in keeping up with handsets, there are plenty out there we’ve yet to cover. One such handset is the Acer Liquid Stream. With only a display model behind a case to tease us, we were left to guess the specs. That was until we talked to a little birdy. According to our tipster, the Acer Liquid Stream currently runs Android 2.1 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip although the speed wasn’t 100 percent known. We’d like to assume it’s the full 1GHz, but it could be underclocked to 768MHz. The phone also features a 5 megapixel camera that records in 720p with HDMI output, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS. We’ll be doing our best to piece together the rest of the picture so check back often!
