Wired Magazine Arrives on the iPad

It was announced and demoed back in March, and now it’s finally here: the Wired Magazine iPad application. When iPad was first announced, many thought that Wired Magazine’s version for the device would be the one to redefine the way we look at magazines. From the looks of it, it doesn’t disappoint: there’s a lot of interactive content (June issue features an interactive map of Mars), as well as slide shows, video and music. It’s also a hefty download: 527 MB is more than enough to store a lot of multimedia content, but you might want to download it over Wi-Fi instead of 3G. The app is available in the App Store for $4.99. Is the iPad Killing Netbooks? [STATS]

According to new data from consumer electronics company Retrevo, iPads might be putting a significant dent in netbook sales. Tablets in general are newer, sexier and sleeker than netbooks, their hardworking if relatively old-school counterparts. When iPads were announced, many consumers put off their netbook purchase plans in order to try out and consider buying an iPad instead. And for folks currently considering a smaller, portable computer, an overwhelming majority are leaning more toward iPads. That being said, laptops are also holding a steady lead in the portable computer market. In the past year and the current year, 65% of consumers who had to choose between a netbook and a laptop went for the latter in the end. If you had to choose between a laptop, a netbook and an iPad, which way would you lean, and why? Do you think netbook sales will suffer further when non-Apple tablets are released? HBO Taps YouTube, iPad and Facebook to Distribute (RED) Documentary

The Lazarus Effect, a new documentary presented by (RED) — the organization that is working the help eliminate AIDS in Africa — is debuting tonight on HBO, Channel 4 in the UK and YouTube. Directed by Lance Bangs and produced by Spike Jonze, the thirty-minute film follows four people in Africa whose lives were saved thanks to antiretroviral drugs. The film will first air on HBO and 9:00 p.m. EDT and at 11 p.m. GMT on Channel 4 in the UK. Then at 9:30 p.m., the film will air on YouTube , where it will available globally and remain online for the rest of the year. This is the first time that an HBO film is getting this kind of global distribution and the film is the centerpiece of (RED)’s digital campaign for the coming year. Check out this trailer to see what the film is all about: The iPad, Facebook and Twitter In addition to being available on YouTube, (RED) will release a free iPad app tomorrow in conjunction with the film. The app will contain the full-length film, as well as additional information about how antiretroviral drugs work and photos of the transformative effect that ARVs have had in Africa. The app will also include ways for users to take action by joining (RED) or lobbying governments. We think that having an iPad app is a really cool part of the campaign — especially since the device’s design makes it a great way to watch a film and then dive into more details about the people, the issues and the potential solutions. Facebook and Twitter are also both going to be used to promote the film and its overall message. (RED) is asking that users tweet and post status updates with the #lazaruseffect hashtag to spread the word about the cause — including facts like “40 cents a day in Africa = 2 lifesaving pills.” HBO also built a special Lazarus Effect Facebook page that users can use to send pre-formatted messages to Twitter or Facebook. Social Media Meets Global Need We’ve written a lot about the role that social media and new technologies are playing in campaigns for the global good. As we’ve seen with the Red Cross’s efforts in Haiti, social media can be a powerful tool to get a message across to lots of people all over the world. The overall message of the film — that HIV/AIDS is preventable and treatable, and that access to treatment is a fundamental part of helping eradicate the disease — is one I fully support. Check out the film, whether you watch on HBO, YouTube or the iPad and then get the word out about what we all can do to help. Steve Jobs to Open Apple’s Developer Conference on June 7

It’s official : Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference will start on Monday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m, with a keynote address by Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. Although Apple has lately been leaking far more information than usual, crowned with a double-leak of the next iPhone prototype and an iPod Touch with a camera , the expectations for this year’s WWDC are as big as ever. Besides the next iPhone, big sales figures for the iPad and some jabs at Android, we can probably expect a surprise or two. When asked by a concerned fan whether Apple has some good announcements prepared for the WWDC, Steve Jobs promised him he “won’t be disappointed.” That’s all we ask, really. The conference runs from June 7 to June 11, providing advanced content for developers across five key technology tracks: Application Frameworks, Internet & Web, Graphics & Media, Developer Tools and Core OS. Apple engineers will deliver over 100 solutions-oriented technical sessions and labs to developers in attendance. Yankee Stadium Bans iPads

According to Apple’s latest commercial , “iPad goes anywhere” — anywhere that is, except for Yankee Stadium . Yahoo! Sports confirmed with the stadium that the iPad falls under its “no laptops” security policy and patrons won’t be able to enter the ball field with one in their possession. Say what now?! So the TSA says that you don’t have to take an iPad out of its case to go through security, but Yankee Stadium says the device is a no-go? The discussion surrounding the ban was spurred from a message by poster Spacekatgal on the IGN Boards . Spacekatgal tried to bring her iPad in to the Yankee/Red Sox game, only to be turned away at the gate. Undeterred, she did re-enter the stadium with her iPad in her jacket — but the ban exists all the same. Now while you can reasonably argue why someone would want to bring an iPad (or any electronic device aside from a cell phone) into a ball game, the out right ban of such a device does strike us as pretty funky, especially when at a stadium that has WiFi throughout the complex. In any event, if you want to bring an iPad to Yankee Stadium this summer (assuming you’re sitting in the shade), you might want to make sure you’ve got a bag or windbreaker that can mask said device from the security guards. Or you could just leave the gadgets at home and watch the game. What do you think of this security policy? Let us know! “Shrek Forever After” Storybook Comes to the iPhone and iPad

iStoryTime and DreamWorks Animation have teamed up to bring a children’s storybook [iTunes link] based on the final film in the Shrek series, Shrek Forever After , which opens in theaters today. As we’ve discussed before, the iPhone and the iPad can both make fantastic digital storybooks for parents and their kids. The touch interface allows kids to skip ahead and interact with content on each “page” and the story can either be read aloud by a narrator or kids can read it themselves. We’re impressed with the sound effects and character audio from the movie, including the voices of Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy. We also like how Sir Squeakels, a squeaky ogre toy from the film, is hidden into every panel, a la “Where’s Waldo” (clicking on Sir Squeakels even makes a squeak). Check out the video below for a visual preview. iPad Still Selling Like Crazy, Sold-Out at Most Apple Stores

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, in most of Apple’s retail stores in the U.S. the iPad is either sold-out or in very limited supply, especially the 3G model. Furthermore, Apple’s online store now lists that iPad is shipping in 7-10 days (previously it was 5-7) days, which also indicates that Apple is selling more iPads than it anticipated. “Seventy-four percent of the stores we checked were completely sold out of all iPad models, 26 percent had some WiFi models in stock, and no stores had any 3G models available,” Munster claims. iPad sales have been phenomenal from the very beginning. Earlier this month, Apple announced it had sold one million iPads. On May 28, iPad is slated to begin shipping in European countries. The question is: Will Apple have enough iPads to satisfy the demand? For more Apple coverage, follow Mashable Apple on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook Tags: apple , Apple Tablet , ipad
